Avoca Shire Turf Club

The Avoca Shire Turf Club is located in Avoca, Victoria - a vibrant rural town located in the heart of the Pyrenees. This magnificent and untouched region is well known for its wineries, scenery, agriculture, the Pyrenees ranges and of course the Avoca Races!

The club has been operating for almost 160 years, missing only six race seasons during WWII, providing a long and rich history.

The Avoca Shire Turf Club races on Caulfield Cup Day and ANZAC Day. Both of Avoca's race meetings are great fun and are well recognised as being the biggest in the state on those days.

So if you are into great food and wine, country fun and thoroughbred racing, join thousands of others and head to the Pyrenees for a great day out!

We'd love you to follow Avoca Races on Facebook, @avocaraces on Twitter and Instagram and #avocaraces.

Our YouTube Channel and Google+ Page is Avoca Shire Turf Club.

The 2016 AVOCA CUP will be held on Saturday, 15th October. Tickets and Packages will be available from June.

Avoca is all about grass roots racing and we’re proud of it. You’ll be greeted at the gates by a member of a country football Club, sold a racebook by the daughter of a committeeman, then served a local glass of sparkling by a Club volunteer.

Many other not-for-profit groups raise much needed funds at our race days by manning the gates, running a raffle or cleaning the grounds, just as a few examples. Our race days also have a significant impact on the social and economic standing of our community with the tourists that come into town for race days.

Our race days also have a significant impact on the social and economic standing of our community with the tourists that come into town for race days.

The club invites you to become a partner of the AVOCA 100 Club and support our club and community.  For only $100 (exc GST) you can join the Avoca 100 Club. Check out the details and CLICK HERE to support and benefit from this Club.

  • All members of the committee play important working roles on the day and are very involved leading up to and after an event.
  • Various sporting, community and emergency services groups use the race days as a platform to raise much needed funds.

The tourist dollars injected into the local community over race periods and from repeat visits help sustain the Pyrenees region. Volunteering for the Club contributes to the success of the race days and supports the local community. To enquire about volunteering, please contact 03 5465 3231.

  • The Club's first season was in 1857-08.
  • Their events then consisted of both trotting and galloping races and were often held over three days.
  • The committee used to hold their committee meetings at The Union, Albion, Avoca & Victoria Hotels.
  • An exert from 1858 says that 'All dogs found on the course will be destroyed.' These days the Clubs just says 'No dogs allowed.'
  • In 1869, the Club had a total of 181 pounds in the bank.
  • In 1873, the first grandstand was built which was later replaced in 1920.
  • In 1874, the races were postponed due to flood conditions.
  • The Club was disbanded during World War II (1939-45) however reformed in 1947 due to the enthusiasm of the local residents. The course back then had little in the way of amenities. Bamboo sticks with red flags made the running rails.
  • In 1974 the then named 'Chateau Remy Cup' was worth $325 and $50 trophy.
  • In 1983 Taltarni became the major sponsor.
  • In 2006 Mount Avoca became the major sponsor of the ANZAC Day Races.
  • In 2009, the Club unfortunately lost its Labour Day weekend races, name Pink Lamb Purple Shiraz.
  • In 2009, PJA Accountants & Business Advisors joined Blue Pyrenees to become naming rights sponsors of the Avoca Cup.
  • In 2010, the Club helped manage the first ever Pyrenees Festival of Racing & Tasting, featuring the Mount Avoca ANZAC Day Races.
  • In 2011, the Club regained its third race meet, the Avoca Community Bank & Pyrenees Newspapers Pyrenees Christmas Racing Shindig
  • The Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup won CRV Racing Event of the Year for Racing Season 12/13
  • 2014 saw the Pyrenees Winemakers Group take on the major sponsorship of the Avoca Cup
  • In Season 15-16, after a good fight the Club lost it's Christmas Race Meeting which was gaining momemtum, the Club hope to win back a third race day in the near future

Those who enjoy a journey of the senses to a destination off the mainstream tourist track will love discovering PYRENEES UNEARTHED.

Celebrating wine, art and racing, PYRENEES UNEARTHED will come alive on Saturday the 23rd of April with the launch of the Avoca Art Exhibition and Sale. Located in the newly renovated town hall the two-day show will also hold the Taltarni Artists Award Ceremony on Saturday evening with finger food and Taltarni wines.

Festival goers will also be able to enjoy crafted intimate cellar door experiences on the Saturday where in true Pyrenees style there will be a good chance of meeting the winemaker in person among many other activities on offer.

The day’s adventures won’t stop there with Mount Mitchell Estate opening their garden for only the second time in around fifteen years. Stroll around the property taking in the views of the Pyrenees while appreciating the rich history and amazing architectural features and gardens of the homestead.

On Sunday meander through the Avoca Riverside Markets en route to the feature event, the Avoca Wine Festival, where it will be time to unearth wines from around fifteen local wineries. Located along the banks of the Avoca River, the festival will have plenty to drink, eat and do with Live Music all day, FREE Kids’ Activities, Petanque Activities, Table Games and much more.

The relaxed and unearthed festival vibe will continue into the night at the Avoca Racecourse where campers and anyone else can join P.W Billy & Trevor Moore around the bonfire for a good ol’ fashion sing-a-long.  A ticket to The Bonfire Bash also includes a barbeque dinner, marshmallows and access to a pop up games room.

Monday the 25th of April will see the dawn service at the Avoca RSL followed by the Jayco ANZAC Day Races, a day full of entertainment with traditional ANZAC Day activities including 2-Up, along with live music, kids activities, Pyrenees wine stalls and country thoroughbred racing at its finest.

By bus or by car, getting there is easy, but for those wanting to spend the weekend under the Pyrenees stars, the Avoca Shire Turf Club offer camping at the racecourse for only $15 per night per site.

So come fall in love with a region ready to be discovered and be greeted with a warm welcome and a smile at PYRENEES UNEARTHED.

Victoria’s magnificent Pyrenees Wine Region is bursting at the vines for recognition!

With a climate similar to its European namesake and a reputation for premium wines this region is coming of age.

The signature grape of the region, Shiraz, has long been recognized by serious wine drinkers and writers alike. The complex and distinctive flavors of the Shiraz grape make it the ‘pick of the vines’ in the Pyrenees Wine Region.

A diverse range of varietals can also be enjoyed. Sparkling wine – both red and white – Cabernet, Sangieovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Riesling are all available for tasting at the twenty Cellar Doors branching out from the township of Avoca.

It is surprising that this region is only now emerging as a hidden tourism destination as the first vines were planted here in the early 1960’s – making the Pyrenees one of the oldest wine regions in Victoria.

The Pyrenees wine touring route now starts much closer to Melbourne than before.

Just outside Waubra on the Sunraysia Highway 20 minutes from Ballarat, you will find the first of the Pyrenees Wine Region experiences.

In addition to a thriving wine industry, the artisan community is growing in force with strong evidence of this throughout the township of Avoca and surrounding villages like Landsborough and Amphitheatre.

Accommodation options have also grown over recent years and the region now offers a range of diverse accommodation styles to meet most budgets and mood!

Beautiful walks through the State Forest and Park to picnic and camping grounds help develop an appetite for local produce and the many dining experiences developing throughout the district.

For the adventurous of spirit the two-day Beeripmo Walk offers a hiking experience through diverse vegetation. Walk through cool fern gullies and alpine plateaus then rest to take in the views across the spreading plains to Langi Ghiran and the Grampians.

Stop overnight at the charming Berripmo Campground, and then descend through spectacular tall forests.
