Dederang Picnic Racing Club

The annual Dederang picnic races are held in the picturesque Kiewa Valley on the first Saturday of January each year (except New Year’s Day).

The Dederang picnic races have been held annually since 1865 raising thousands of dollars for charity and the local community through the efforts of local volunteers.

The races attract spectators from all over the eastern states, maintaining its proud history and securing it’s standing as one of the premier picnic race meetings in country Victoria.

The day offers a six race program, with the feature event the Milestone Dederang Cup.  Once the horse racing is finished stay on to experience the spectacle that is the famous Madman’s Mile. Speedsters of all ages put their bodies to the test and take on a full lap of the course proper under race conditions. But if running isn’t your style then get a team of mates together for the winner takes all Tug of War challenge.  

So if you want to experience grass roots racing at its very best, come along to our  next meeting for a day that promises be full of fun, fashion, fabulous food, bars, full TAB and strong bookmakers, with on ground entertainment for adults and children alike. Marquees are available for groups of friends, family or corporate groups.

1. A membership ticket which entitles you to entry at the annual race meeting during the 2013/2014 season.

Kiewa Valley Highway, Dederang





Low cost transport is available to and from the Dederang Races. Buses will arrive at the grounds between 11:30am and 12 noon on race day and will depart at 6:30pm allowing you plenty of time to enjoy the after race events such as the Madman's Mile and Tug of War.

Bus travel information:


For Adults (16yrs and over) cost is $25 per person which includes return coach travel and general admission to the races.

For Children under 16 years of age the cost is $8.00 per child which includes return coach travel and free admission.

All seats must be paid for at the time of booking to secure your seat.

There is no direct train to Dederang, although you can catch the train to Wodonga / Albury and then book a bus.





Nestled in the picturesque Kiewa Valley, Dederang is about half an hour south of Albury-Wodonga on the Kiewa Valley Highway enroute to the Victorian snowfields. 

The Kiewa River, which runs through the valley, provides some of the best trout fishing in the region. 

Swarms of visitors come to Dederang for the annual picnic races. 

The Falls Creek ski resort, the Snowy Mountains and Mount Beauty all lay at the head of the valley which Dederang shares with the townships of Kergunyah, Gundowring and Tawonga.
