Donald & District Racing Club History

The Donald Races take place – as one would expect – in the township of Donald, Victoria, which is located just an hour North East of Horsham. With a lively spirit, it is no wonder that the first racecourse in Donald is rumored to have been down the main the street of the town - what a tradition!

A small town, Donald is big on racing action. The race meets in Donald form a very important part of the social and community fabric and spirit. With a population of 1700, Donald is a quiet, but interesting, agricultural town.

The first race meeting held by the Donald Turf Club was in 1875. Despite this, however, legend has it that the first organised race meet was in 1865. Of interest, is that the first racecourse in Donald was actually its main street!

There was a merger between the Donald Turf Club and the Corack Club in 1963 and it became the Donald & District Race Club. In 1978, these clubs then merged with the Wachem-Birchip Club. The Wimmera Racing Club (established in 1998) is now responsible for racing at the Donald Track.

Racecourse Road, Donald VIC

Visit (Northern Region)

Donald is a small country town with a lively spirit situated approximately 3 hours drive north west of Melbourne.

Nearby, Lake Buloke is in not only one of Victoria’s largest lakes but it is also a significant breeding ground for waterfowl, especially ducks.

The smaller Lake Jil Jil also provides its share of game in the form of trout and redfin, which also attract their share of fish-eating birds.

And no visit to Donald is complete without a photograph of the famous bullock’s head - an unusual, natural growth on a riverside box tree.

Wildflower lovers should time their visit to coincide with the spring show in the Mt Jeffcott Reserve where 4WD visitors can enjoy the panaoramic views from the summit.
