Geelong Racing Club

The Geelong Racing Club was founded in March 1865 at a public meeting at the British Hotel. The first Geelong Cup was held in 1872 over a distance of two miles and was won by Flying Scud. In 1903 the racecourse was transferred to its present site at Breakwater Road where the Geelong Racing Club will host more than 45 race meetings in the 2013/14 racing season.

The Geelong Racing Club was founded in March 1865 at a public meeting at the British Hotel.
The first Geelong Cup was held in 1872 over a distance of two miles and was won by Flying Scud.
In 1903 the racecourse was transferred to its present site at Breakwater where the Geelong Racing Club will host more than 45 race meetings in the 2013/14 racing season.
The traditional two day Geelong Cup carnival was consolidated back to one day of racing in 2003.
The Irish stayer Media Puzzle took out the 2002 Geelong Cup before going on to win a memorable Melbourne Cup a fortnight later.
In 2007 the Europe trained stayer Bauer took out the Geelong Cup and went on to win the Melbourne Cup 13 days later.
In 2010 the French horse Americain won the Geelong Cup and then took out the Melbourne Cup the same year.
In 2011 another French trained stayer Dunaden also completed the Geelong and Melbourne Cups double.
Following these successes, the Geelong Cup is now recognised internationally as a key lead up race to the Melbourne Cup.
The Geelong Racing Club has the only all weather synthetic race track in Victoria, and races twice a week during the Winter months in addition to hosting meetings transferred from turf tracks affected by wet weather.

Follow the Princes Highway (M1) from Melbourne to Geelong. If coming via the Princes Freeway, turn left at Fyans Street (Red Rooster), then follow this to the next set of lights at Moorabool Street. Turn right at Moorabool and travel approximately 300m to Barwon Terrace. Turn left at Barwon Terrace (just before the bridge) and follow this to the Race Course. If using the bypass take the Waurn Ponds exit and travel back towards Geelong, turning right at Fyans Street.

TRAIN
http://www.vline.com.au The closest station is South Geelong, which is approximately 2km from the Course. A taxi from here will cost approximately $10.
