Mansfield District Racing Club

Welcome to the Mansfield District Racing Club.

Mansfield district is known as Ned Kelly country and has a rich history when it comes to horses and horse racing. The area’s first recorded race was held in 1855. In 1869, The Mansfield Jockey Club was formed and in 1930, the Mansfield Jockey Club was relocated to its present site on Benalla Road, hosting its first race meet in 1932.

Mansfield District Racing Club hosts the Mansfield Melbourne Cup on the Melbourne Cup Day holiday and the Mansfield Cup now to be held in the month of April.  We also host the Tenors on the Turf event in March each year. The club is also available for functions and events.

Mansfield is recognised for its iconic mountain horse men and women and is one of Australia's largest recreational horse riding regions. It is no surprise that the township also has a love affair with horse racing, dating back 160 years.

HISTORY

Mansfield is recognised for its iconic mountain horse men and women and is one of Australia's largest recreational horse riding regions. It is no surprise that the township also has a love affair with horse racing, dating back 160 years. The first recorded race meeting in Mansfield was on December 27th and 28th in 1855. However, the first official race club ~ known as the Mansfield Jockey Club ~ was formed in 1869. The first race meeting under its auspices was held on March 9th and 10th in 1870. At the time, the President was Mr Chenery; the Vice President Mr Kitchen; and the Secretary was Mr. A. Smith. The first race meeting included a 2 mile race for 50 sovereigns and a steeple chase over 3 miles for 40 sovereigns. At this time, the races were held at what is now the Mansfield Botanic Park. The race meetings moved to new locations on a few occasions before the current land became available in 1928. The first meeting at the current course was held in April, 1932. The depression and World War II caused racing to cease at times, but since 1944, the club has raced regularly. In nearby Maindample, the race track was closed in 1931. After a brief comeback at Mansfield in the 1930's, the Maindample racing club commenced racing regularly in 1946. In 1964-1965, the Maindample and the Mansfield Jockey Club amalgamated to form the Mansfield District Racing Club. The Mansfield District Racing Club has held meetings at the course ever since. Mansfield District Racing Club is also a training facility. A number of local trainers have stables nearby and on course; racing with regular success. Mansfield has also been a great training ground for young jockeys with a number of apprentices going on to forge professional careers as senior riders. Notable apprentices of esteemed Mansfield trainer Gerald Egan include Michael Pritchard, Luke Nolan, Nick Hall, Damien Robinson, and Billy Egan. Current up and coming jockeys are Jye McNeil (Rising Star 2014 and 15, Mitch Aiken and Lockie King.
