ASTC MEDIA RELEASE: Avoca Shire Turf Club announces Sarah Astbury as Young Members Ambassador

Encouraging the younger generation of today to be involved with not-for-profit Clubs such as the Avoca Shire Turf Club is high on the agenda of new Young Members Ambassador, Sarah Asbury.

Known as ‘Sez’ to friends and family, volunteer and member Sarah Astbury has been around the Avoca Shire Turf Club for as long a she can remember due to her family’s involvement.

Sarah is one of three daughters of Lloyd and Colleen Astbury, whom have been members of the Club for 25 years, joining in the year they married. Lloyd is also a valued member of the committee and sponsor with his business Astbury Welding & Contracting.

The family history with the Club dates back even further to Lloyd’s grandfather, C.K. Astbury, who was a tireless volunteer and secretary to the Avoca Shire Turf Club for many years. Sarah is as passionate about the Avoca races as her family and when approached to help launch and promote the all-new Young Membership program was thrilled. “I love the buzz around the Pyrenees region when the races are on and I was very honoured with the invite to become the Club’s Young Members Ambassador,” Sarah Astbury said.

Sarah, who has family in Avoca, currently works and resides in Horsham. She went to school in Ballarat, studied hospitality at William Angliss Tafe in Melbourne and grew up in Maryborough.

She enjoys the hospitality industry because she loves meeting new people and interacting with customers.  Sarah also loves fashion and will be helping judge Fashions on the Field at the PJA & Blue Pyrenees Avoca Cup this year.

The Avoca Shire Turf Club hope this membership program will not only allow 18-25 year olds to socialize with each other on race day in the Young Members Enclosure, but also provide an opportunity to communicate the importance of membership in community Clubs.

‘The survival of our club is dependant on healthy membership. It helps ensure the future of Avoca’s race meetings and we hope that the Young Membership option will encourage new members to the Club who will remain as members for many years to come,” Club Manager, Gus Harrison said.

The Avoca Shire Turf Club, who have been nominated for Club of the Year by Country Racing Victoria, have a membership option for everyone, including standard membership, family membership, platinum membership and young membership. All membership options provide great value for money and a fun way to enjoy a day out at the races.
