BJC MEDIA RELEASE: Gallic Club Supports Blue Ribbon

A new initiative of the Bendigo Jockey Club named 'The Gallic Club' has donated $8250.00 to the Blue Ribbon Foundation - Bendigo branch as proceeds from the inaugural Gallic Club luncheon held to celebrate the 2009 Jayco Bendigo Cup.

BJC President Brendan Drechsler said "The Gallic Club is designed to bring together people from the business and sporting community to celebrate sporting sucess in Bendigo and raise funds for agreed charitable causes and projects to support major sporting events in the local community."

Blue Ribbon Foundation Bendigo President Leading Senior Constable Rod Brown said "These funds generously provided by the Gallic Club will be utilised toward the new short stay unit at the Bendigo Hospital as part of The Blue Ribbon Foundations' overall commitment of $110,000 to purchase vital equipment for the short stay unit project."

The Short Stay Unit will be named after Constable William Benbow, who was born in Eaglehawk, joined the Victoria Police Force at a young age and was tragically killed on duty in 1971 when a brick wall collapsed on him while keeping sight seers away from a large factory fire in Richmond.  The Victoria Police Blue Ribbon Foundation is most grateful to the "Gallic Club" for providing this valuable financial support as well as being selected as the Beneficiary from its inaugural luncheon.

The next Gallic Club luncheon event will be Thursday 4 March to celebrate the Bendigo Cycling Madison and funds raised will be used to encourage a local cycling team and foster local cycling talent.
