The Wangaratta Turf Club is currently undergoing a course proper reconstruction. We will not be racing here for a period of 10 months whilst this happens. This upgrade will help ensure successful racing at Wangaratta for many years to come.

The reconstruction will provide the following benefits for the Wangaratta Turf Club:

  • Improved Camber and levels of the course proper
  • Improved Drainage of the surface
  • Removal of winter weed grass species including “POA” and “Bent Grass”
  • Stronger Kikuyu surface which will be able to undertake greater usage for training, jump outs, trials and racing.
  • Decreased Maintenance costs of providing a premium racing surface

The reconstruction will include:

  • The course proper being sprayed with round up and mowed down to prepare the surface to be taken off
  • The removal of the top 40mm of surface to remove 90% of the seed bed
  • Laser levelling to ensure a completely lever surface
  • Over 3,000 cubic meters of sand added to the profile of the track to improve drainage and growing conditions for the grass before the new grass is planted
  • Line planting with kikuyu grass

All of this will happen by the end of January with the following 9 months allowing for the new grass to grow and consolidate. The maintenance and care of the new grass will be looked after by our local track team.

The cost of this project is in excess of $380,000 and is being funded by the Victorian State Government, Racing Victoria and the Wangaratta Turf Club.

Racing began in 1845 at North Wangaratta. Ten years later the Club moved to its present site.
Years ago included in the racing programs were pony races, hurdle races and steeplechases, with a water jump in front of the grandstand.

The first Wangaratta Cup was run in 1904, before that time the premier race was called a plate. The Wangaratta Cup is now run in April. Two horses have won the Wangaratta Cup twice, Sarakos 1935 & 1936, Here's Cheers 1971 & 1972. St Patrick's Wangaratta Racing Club also used this track for their charity meetings from 1923-2003 and staged the first all grey horse race in Victoria at Wangaratta, and also the first Sunday meeting in the area on this track.

In 1985 the Wangaratta Turf Club was one of the first Victorian country clubs invited to race on Melbourne Cup Day, which has proven to be a bonanza for the club.

Makybe Diva whom became a household name in 2005 after her third consecutive Melbourne Cup Victory began her amazing career wins at Wangaratta over 1600 meters in a maiden on a heavy track, who would be the most notable horse to race at Wangaratta.

The Winsec Savings and Loans Wangaratta Cup is the Club's Premier Event held on the first Sunday in March.
